Cougars Sweep Miles with Two Run-Rule Wins

The CSU softball team beat Miles 11-0 in both games.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team swept a doubleheader against nonconference opponent Miles College with two run-rule victories on Tuesday, March 21 at Cougar Field. The Cougars won both games 11-0 and improve to 21-10 while Miles falls to 11-9.

Game 1 - CSU 11, MC 0 (5 inn.)
  • Haylee Folds earned the shut-out victory inside the circle after striking out eight batters and only allowing one hit and two walks in 5.0 innings of work. She is now 3-2 on the season.
  • Hannah Rose Corbin put the Cougars ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the left side to score Caitlyn Canady.
  • Columbus State scored eight runs in the second starting with back-to-back home runs from Brooke Miller and Holly Lynn, giving CSU a 4-0 lead. Madeline Parker then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Anna Waites to score. Three singles from Elyse Ambrose, Kenzie Bayer and Miller extended CSU's lead to 9-0.
  • In the third, Ambrose ripped a two-run RBI double down the left field line, plating Parker and Kristen Odum, making it 11-0.
  • Ambrose, Bayer and Miller each tallied two hits with Miller recording three RBIs.
Game 2 - CSU 11, MC 0 (5 inn.)
  • Jessica Lopez received the win on the mound after striking out 10 batters, allowing zero walks and only giving up two hits. Her record improves to 8-2.
  • The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead in the first thanks to an Ambrose RBI fielder's choice to the shortstop, scoring Canady, and a Miller RBI double to left center field.
  • Miller did it again in the third, hitting a rocket right off of the tip of the third baseman's glove to plate Corbin. Bayer then collected two RBIs with a double to right field, extending CSU's lead to 6-0.
  • Columbus State scored five runs in the fourth to solidify the run-rule, starting with an RBI sacrifice bunt from Canady, scoring Katelyn Cooper from second base. Two batters later, Corbin launched a two-run homer over the center field wall, making it 9-0. A Laura Harris RBI single up the middle scored Ambrose, followed up by a Paige Vincent RBI double to right center, plating Grace Kiser, put CSU up 11-0.
  • Corbin and Miller each posted two hits and two RBIs.

Columbus State will be back in conference action against USC Aiken on Saturday, March 25 at 4 p.m. at Cougar Field.
