Bayer's Walk-Off Home Run Lifts Cougars Past USCA

Kenzie Bayer hit a two-run walk-off home run to beat USC Aiken 6-4.

COLUMBUS - Junior Kenzie Bayer launched a two-run walk-off home run over the left center field fence to lift the Columbus State University softball team over Peach Belt Conference opponent USC Aiken 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars improve to 24-10 (10-2 PBC) and the Pacers drop to 14-21 (6-9 PBC).

USC Aiken got on board first in the top of the second inning with a Mallory Shaver solo home run over center field to give the Pacers a 1-0 lead over the Cougars for just one inning.

CSU rallied in the third inning, starting with a Madeline Parker homer down the right field line to tie the game. Later in the inning with two outs and runners on first and second, Brooke Miller ripped a line drive into center field, scoring Laura Harris to break the tie ballgame and Bayer moving to third base. With Grace Kiser at the plate, Miller forces a run down situation between first and second, allowing Bayer to sneak home to give CSU the 3-1 lead.

However, USCA tied the game in the fifth thanks to a pinch-hit, two-run RBI single center field. In the sixth, the Pacers took a 4-3 lead with a Shy Cain home run over left field.

Entering the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars executed everything head coach Brad Huskisson had planned. Corbin began the inning with a lead off walk and Mary-Catherine Sorrell came in to pinch-run for her. Elyse Ambrose laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Sorrell to second base. Harris then singled to the left center field wall, scoring Sorrell and tying the game at four. It was the Bayer who didn't waste any time to launch the game-winning two-run bomb, sending the Pacers home.

Hannah Rose Corbin received the win inside the circle and is now 12-6. She tallied 10 strikeouts, walked two batters and allowed three hits.
