COLUMBUS - The No. 24 Columbus State University softball team defeated Peach Belt Conference contender Georgia Southwestern State University in a 5-0 shutout pitched by senior
Hannah Rose Corbin, the new all-time CSU leader in innings pitched. The Cougars improve to 31-12 (16-3 PBC) and the Hurricanes fall to 29-11 (12-4 PBC).
Columbus State got on board first thanks to a
Grace Kiser RBI double down the left field line, plating
Laura Harris who doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning.Â
The Cougars added another run in the fourth inning with a two-out solo home run from the PBC Player of the Week,
Kenzie Bayer. Bayer now leads CSU with 14 homers on the season.
In the bottom of the fifth, CSU extended it's lead to 5-0. With bases loaded, Corbin walked and received an RBI. Later in the inning, Harris hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to right field, scoringÂ
Caitlyn Canady from third. The GSW defense put Corbin in a run-down, allowing
Madeline Parker to sneak home and another run to the board.
Corbin only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out 10 batters in her seventh shut out of the season. The Cougars tallied five hits with Canady, Harris, Bayer, Kiser and
Katelyn Cooper each recording one.
