Miller Leads Cougars to Sweep GSW

Brooke Miller hit three home runs, including a walk-off homer in the nightcap.

COLUMBUS - Brooke Miller led the Columbus State University softball team to two wins over Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia Southwestern State University, hitting three home runs in two games, including a walk-off bomb in the nightcap. The Cougars swept the three-game series, winning the first game 9-4 and the second 7-6.

With the wins, CSU improves to 33-12 (18-3 PBC) and GSW falls to 29-13 (12-6 PBC).

Game 1 - CSU 9, GSW 4
  • CSU scored six runs in the bottom of the first, starting with an Elyse Ambrose bases loaded two-run RBI double to left center field, plating Caitlyn Canady and Madeline Parker. Laura Harris followed up with an RBI single into right field to score Hannah Rose Corbin and Brooke Miller capped it off with a three-run home run, her first of three on the day.
  • GSW added one run to the board in the third with a solo home run.
  • Miller did it again in the next half of the inning, jacking a bomb over the left center field fence to make it a 7-1 ballgame.
  • The Hurricanes hit two homers in the fourth, making the score 7-4.
  • RBIs from Corbin and Ambrose extended the Cougars' lead to 9-4 in the fourth inning.
  • Canady, Harris and Miller each tallied two hits. 
  • Jessica Lopez received the win inside the circle after coming into the game in relief. She allowed no runs scored, struck out five, only walked one batter and allowed one hit.
Game 2 - CSU 7, GSW 6
  • Ambrose put CSU ahead 3-0 in the first thanks to a three-run home run to right field.
  • The Canes took a 4-3 lead in the fourth after three RBI singles and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
  • Madeline Parker pushed the Cougars ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single into left center.
  • GSW tied the game at five with a home run in the fifth, then took the lead in the sixth with another solo homer.
  • In the final inning, Bayer and Miller hit back-to-back home runs to win the game.
  • Parker went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Ambrose and Miller each recorded two hits. 
  • Lopez entered the game in relief again for CSU and gained the win. She is now 11-2.

Columbus State will host the University of South Carolina Beaufort for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Cougar Field starting on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
