Softball Sweeps USC Beaufort, Corbin Breaks CSU Home Run Record

The Cougars swept a doubleheader against the Sand Sharks and Hannah Rose Corbin became the all-time CSU home run leader.

COLUMBUS - Senior Hannah Rose Corbin broke the Columbus State University softball all-time home run record in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against University of South Carolina Beaufort on Saturday, April 15. Corbin tied the record of 49 previously held by Casey Dial (Googe, '13) in the first game of the day. The Clanton, Ala. native then smacked two homers in the second game to become the all-time leader.

The Cougars beat the Sand Sharks 12-3 (5 innings) in game one then won 10-9 in the nightcap.

Game 1 - CSU 12, USCB 3 (5 inn.)
  • USCB took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a three-run homer, but the Cougars tallied on five runs in the bottom of the inning to put them ahead by two.
  • With bases loaded, Kenzie Bayer received an RBI after walking, then Brooke Miller cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line. Miller scored off ofa wild pitch to make it 5-3 CSU.
  • Bayer and Miller executed again in the third as Bayer hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Corbin, and Miller followed up with an RBI groundout, scoring Ambrose and giving CSU a 7-3 lead.
  • In the fifth, Parker, Corbin and Harris hit home runs, putting the run-rule into affect and ending the game in the fifth.
  • Corbin earned the win inside the circle after striking out eight batters and allowing three walks and four hits in five innings pitched. She now posts a 17-7 record.
  • Harris went 2-for-2 and Miller tallied four RBIs.
Game 2 - CSU 10, USCB 9
  • The Sand Sharks got on board first scoring two runs in the first two innings, however the Cougars added six runs off of three hits in the bottom of the second to take the lead.
  • Freshman Nova Wright hit her second home run of the season and tying the game 2-2. Later in the inning, Caitlyn Canady doubled down the left field line to score Katelyn Cooper and Corbin knocked out her record breaking homer to give CSU a 6-2 lead.
  • USCB minimized CSU's lead to two runs with a homer in the fourth, but Corbin and Bayer each hit a home run in the next half of the inning, extending the Cougars' lead to 8-4.
  • The Sand Sharks jacked another home run in the fifth, making it 8-5. In the bottom of the inning, Ambrose walked in a run to put CSU up 9-5.
  • Bayer smashed her second homer of the game in the sixth, giving the Cougars' a 10-5 lead heading into the seventh.
  • USCB didn't give up as the Sand Sharks scored four runs in the top of the seventh.
  • Haylee Folds received the win on the mound and is now 7-2. She struck out four batters in 3.2 innings pitched.
  • Canady, Corbin and Bayer each posted two hits and Corbin tallied four RBIs.

Columbus State and USC Beaufort will play the final game of the PBC series on Sunday, April 16 at noon at Cougar Field.
