COLUMBUS - The No. 24 Columbus State University softball team defeated Peach Belt Conference opponent University of South Carolina Beaufort 17-1 on Sunday, April 16, sweeping the series. The Cougars hit three home runs in the win, improving to 36-12 overall, 21-3 in the PBC and are now 22-0 at Cougar Field.
Laura Harris got things started in the bottom of the first inning, knocking in two runs with a single to center field. The Sand Sharks got one run back in the second thanks to a solo home run from Zinia Hampleton.
The Cougar seniors delivered five runs in the second inning to make it a 6-1 ball game.
Madeline Parker ripped a two-run RBI double up the middle, plating
Holly Lynn and
Caitlyn Canady.
Hannah Rose Corbin then jacked a two-run home run and
Elyse Ambrose followed up with a solo bomb.
Columbus State opened the game up in the third, scoring 10 runs off of two singles from Canady and Parker, two bases loaded walks from Harris and
Kenzie Bayer and a
Brooke Miller grand slam.Â
Canady led CSU going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Parker and Miller each tallied four RBIs and Harris recorded two.
With the win, Corbin improves to 18-7 inside the circle after striking out seven batters and only allowing three hits.
The Cougars have clinched hosting the first round of the Peach Belt Conference at Cougar Field, securing the second spot in the conference behind No. 1 ranked University of North Georgia.

Columbus State will host Shorter University for a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19 starting at 3 p.m. at Cougar Field. This will be the Cougars' last regular season home game.
