Cougars Run Rule in Doubleheader vs. Shorter

CSU won 8-0 in game one and 9-1 in the nightcap.

COLUMBUS - The No. 24 Columbus State University softball team run-ruled Shorter University in both games of the non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19 at Cougar Field. Columbus State improves to 38-12 and completes the regular-season home schedule undefeated for the first time since 2007, with a record of 24-0.

Game 1 - CSU 8, SU 0 (5 inn.)

The Cougars scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to three home runs from Grace Kiser (2RBI), Hannah Rose Corbin (3RBI) and Elyse Amrbose (1 RBI). Madeline Parker also ripped an RBI single up the middle to plate Lindsay Patton.

CSU reached the run-rule with eight runs in the third inning as Kenzie Bayer jacked her 18th homer of the season over the center field fence.

Corbin earned her 19th win of the season inside the circle. She struck out four batters, walked one and only allowed two hits in the five-inning shut out, her eighth of the year.

Corbin and Ambrose each tallied two hits for the Cougars.

Game 2 - CSU 9, SU 1 (5 inn.)

Shorter scored in the first inning thanks to a solo home run. That would be the only time teh Hawks scored as Haylee Folds only allowed two hits, no walks and struck out three in her four innings pitched victory. Jessica Lopez came in for relief in the fifth, striking out one batter and not allowing any walks or hits.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the second with two RBI singles up the middle from Bayer and Katelyn Cooper. In the third, Laura Harris and Nova Wright hit singles to extend the Cougars' lead to 5-1.

Caitlyn Canady started off the bottom of the fourth inning with an inside the park home run down the right field line. Harris came up clutch again with an RBI single up the middle, putting CSU one run away from run-ruling the Hawks for the second time. Freshman Holly Lynn stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and jacked a two-run RBI single through the left side to secure the 9-1 run-rule victory.

Harris led Columbus State with three hits and Ambrose and Harris each tallied two.

UP NEXT
Columbus State will travel to Young Harris, Ga. on Saturday, April 22 for the final Peach Belt Conference series of the regular-season against Young Harris College. The first pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
