DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Columbus State University softball team swept a doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference rival and No. 1 ranked the University of North Georgia on Sunday, April 9 at Lynn Cottrell Park. The Cougars defeated the Nighthawks 4-3 in game one, then scored 11 runs in the fifth inning in the nightcap to secure a 19-10 victory.
With the wins, Columbus State gives North Georgia their third loss of the season and snaps the Nighthawks' 38 game win streak. The Cougars improve to 30-11 and are 15-2 in the PBC.
Game 1 - CSU 4, UNG 3
- UNG scored two runs in the second inning off of a bases loaded walk and wild pitch to take an early lead over CSU
- Trailing by two in the top of the fifth, the Cougars were able to copy the Nighthawks and get back one run thanks to a Hannah Rose Corbin RBI bases loaded walk
- UNG extended it's lead to 3-1 with an RBI groundout in the next half of the inning.
- Kenzie Bayer tied the game at three, jacking a two-run home run in the sixth
- In the seventh, the Nighthawks walked Grace Kiser with bases loaded, plating Anna Waites
- Corbin earned the win inside the circle and is now 15-7
- Laura Harris went 3-for-3 and Bayer was 2-for-4
Game 2 - CSU 19, UNG 10
- UNG hit back-to-back homers in the first to make it 5-0
- In the second and third innings, Bayer jacked a two-run bomb and Corbin hit a solo homer to minimize UNG's lead to 5-3
- In the bottom of the third, the Nighthawks added two runs thanks to a groundout and a single up the middle
- The Cougars tallied 11 runs off of five consecutive hits in the fifth inning to make a point to the Nighthawks and taking a 14-7 lead
- UNG was able to make it a 14-10 ball game in the fifth and sixth innings
- Corbin and Bayer did it again for CSU, hitting home runs to extend the Cougar lead to 19-10. They each finished 3-for-5 with Corbin posting six RBIs and Bayer five
- Lindsay Patton recorded two doubles
- Haylee Folds received the victory on the mound and improves to 5-2
