COLUMBUS – On a beautiful Wednesday evening, the No. 2-ranked Columbus State women's soccer team welcomed Georgia Southwestern for a Peach Belt Conference clash at the Walden Soccer Complex.
The Lady Cougars (12-0-1, 6-0-0 PBC) hindered the Hurricanes (6-6-0, 4-3-0 PBC) in a 5-0 win in front of a fantastic home crowd.
CSU trounced a red-hot GSW side that came into the Walden Soccer Complex on a four-game high and a winning result at North Georgia just a few days ago. Four goals were poured into the back of the net in the first half with a fifth following in the second half for the 5-0 result.
First Half
The Lady Cougars dominated possession early and held control of the ball with three shots in the first 11 minutes of play. A pair of attempts on goal by
Faith Knoedler were denied by GSW keeper Alana Beddow, keeping CSU scoreless.
Columbus State's scoreless drought would end in the 15th minute as the Lady Cougars were given a penalty kick opportunity after a foul in the box.
Vanessa Aviles slotted home her sixth goal of the season from the penalty spot to help lift CSU to a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Cougars did not let off the gas, ripping three more shots toward goal within the next four minutes. In the 19th minute,
Sarah Hungerford received a ball from a poor clearance by the GSW defense and found the back of the net for her fifth goal this season and the two-goal advantage.
After a slight lull in offensive opportunities from CSU, the Lady Cougars found themselves with a 3-0 advantage after
Sophia Leal took advantage of another poorly timed clearance. Leal roped one in the back left corner from the top of the 18-yard box for her second goal this season in the 39th minute.
Columbus State closed out the half with a fourth score off the right foot of
Ui Suzuki in the 40th minute. Suzuki received the ball at the top of the box after a badly placed clearance from the Hurricanes' defense and she placed her shot perfectly past the keeper for the 4-0 lead.
CSU's attack dominated the first 45 minutes of play, recording 19 shots with eight on goal. The backline for CSU suffocated any offensive opportunities from the visitors and held GSW to zero shots.
Second Half
The second half was rather quieter compared to the typical Columbus State standard of play as the Lady Cougars produced just 10 shots with four on goal. CSU started with three shots early and pressured with possession in the final third but could not finish their chances.
Columbus State would eventually find the back of the net in the 63rd minute as Leal whipped in a freekick to the back of the box to find the head of
Sage Smith who knocked it in for her first goal of the 2024 campaign.
Mia Robinson would register shots on goal in the 66th and 73rd minutes, which were saved by Beddow.
Michelle Medina registered the final shot on frame for the Lady Cougars in the 82nd minute. Columbus State would go on to hold the five-goal edge and secure the12th win of the season and sixth-straight PBC victory.
