COLUMBUS – No. 4 Columbus State Women's Soccer returned to Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday afternoon, hosting Albany State at the Walden Soccer Complex.
The Lady Cougars (7-0-1, 2-0-0 PBC) dominated against the Golden Rams (1-8-0, 0-3-0 PBC) in a historic 17-0 victory in front of a home crowd in Columbus, setting a new single-game scoring record.
First Half
Columbus State pounced on the visitors early landing a ball in the back of the net just 17 seconds in as
Emma Beddow dribbled through the ASU defense and slotted home her fourth score of the season.
The Lady Cougars found another goal just a couple of minutes later, scoring in the 3rd minute. Michell Medina netted her fourth goal of the season with the help of Beddow to give CSU a 2-0 advantage early.
Lizz Forshaw would go on to score in the 17th minute in a solo effort followed by another Beddow-Medina connection in the 18th minute as Medina slotted her second goal of the match while Beddow assisted her second for the 4-0 lead.
Medina would go on to net her third of the game and move to six goals on the season, scoring in the 22nd minute with the help of
Sarah Hungerford. Forshaw followed seconds later, bagging her second of the match to move the CSU lead to 6-0 with over 20 minutes left to play in the half.
The Lady Cougars poured in four more goals before the break.
Faith Knoedler connected for a goal in the 34th minute with the help of
Elle Henschel followed by a score from
Ui Suzuki in the 38th minute with the assist coming from
Gabi Hernandez. CSU swiftly scored again in the 38th minute as
Amelia Donaldson scored with the help of Henschel once again.
With a 9-0 lead, the Lady Cougars would net one final goal before the break as Suzuki connected on a pass from Donaldson to give Columbus State a double-digit advantage heading to the intermission.
Columbus State dominated with a 26-0 shot differential, landing 18 shots on goal.
Second Half
The Lady Cougars continued with their dominant form into the second half, scoring four minutes into the half. Forshaw bagged a goal at the 49:11 mark with the assistance from
Abigail Akerson for the 11-0 advantage.
Suzuki would go on to convert from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute to total three goals in the match. CSU would follow up with another score four minutes later as Knoedler dribbled past the ASU defense for the 13th score of the match.
CSU took advantage of another penalty kick opportunity in the 59th minute with
Ansley Caldwell scoring her first goal of the season. Donaldson tallied her second score of the match in the 74th minute with another assist coming from Henschel and was followed by
Juanita Escobar's score in the 75th minute with the help of Henschel once again.
After assisting four goals, Henschel would go on to score a goal for herself to give CSU the 17-0 lead in the 77th minute as Escobar assisted the effort.
Columbus State finished the second half with a 19-1 differential in shots, recording 10 shots on goal in the process.
Inside the Numbers
- Columbus State finished with a season-high 45 shots overall and a season-best 28 shots on goal.
- The Lady Cougars broke the program's single game scoring record, besting the previous record by two goals
- Forshaw, Medina, and Suzuki notched hat tricks while Donaldson and Knoedler scored two each
- All three CSU keepers recorded minutes with Heidi Harris earning the start and totaling 21 minutes
- Roxy Mathews followed with nearly 36 minutes in goal before Huda Sayedzada closed out the game in between the sticks
- CSU recorded a season-high 11 assists led by four assists from Henschel and two from Beddow
- Beddow now leads with 15 points this season with four goals and seven assists
- Medina and Suzuki both have six goals, and one assist this season for a second-best 13 points
- The Lady Cougars are now 5-0 against Albany State have outscored the Rams for a combined 45-0 in the last three meetings
