FAIRFIELD, Ala. –Columbus State University Women's Basketball traveled to Fairfield, Ala. for a Saturday night meeting against Miles (Ala.).
The Lady Cougars (3-1) defeated the Golden Bears (0-1) 65-50 in the host's season opener at Knox-Windham Gym.
First Quarter
Miles opened the game with a pair of layups to take an early lead over Columbus State. The Lady Cougars responded with an 8-0 run over the next few minutes to claim stake of the lead.
The Golden Bears pulled within one point with just over two minutes to play in the period. In the dying minutes of the quarter, CSU went on a 7-2 run capped by a trey from
Jasmine Rai Stevens to lead 15-9.
Second Quarter
Bre'lyn Snipes knocked down a three-pointer just 50 seconds into the quarter, but that was the lone score for CSU for the first five minutes of action. In the opening few minutes of the period, Miles outscored Columbus State 8-3 to cut the deficit down to just one.
A jumper from Snipes at the 5:26 mark sparked a 16-5 run from the Lady Cougars to close out the half with a 34-22 advantage. In the second quarter, CSU bested the Golden Bears 19-13 to remain in control of the score.
Third Quarter
Despite the efforts from the hosts, CSU held onto a double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest. Miles brought down the deficit to 10 points a few times in the third quarter, but Columbus State outscored the Golden Bears 17-15 to help secure a 51-37 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Fourth Quarter
A quick 6-2 spurt from Miles to open the fourth moved the deficit to 10, yet the Lady Cougars remained composed enough to keep the double-digit advantage. CSU held onto a 14-13 edge in the quarter, shooting for just 3-of17 from the field, 0-of-7 from three, and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Inside the Numbers
- The Lady Cougars finished shooting for a season-high 91.7% (22-of-24) from the foul line while going just 26.3% (5-of-9) from three.
- Columbus State struggled for the worst field goal percentage of the season, shooting 27.9% (19-of-68) from the field.
- Letiya Reeves scored 15 points with five steals and a pair of assists.
- Simone Lett tallied 10 points and three rebounds.
- Olonna Rawls led the rebounding efforts with six.
- Sophia Williams led with three assists.
- Ball control improved for the season's lowest turnover count of nine.
- As a team, CSU tallied 23 steals on 30 Golden Bear turnovers, scoring 27 points from Miles' mishaps.
