TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The No. 23-ranked Columbus State University Women's Basketball team traveled to Tuskegee Ala. for a matchup at Tuskegee (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Cougars (3-2) slipped to the Golden Tigers (2-2) in a 71-66 defeat in the James Center Arena.
First Quarter
CSU opened with a trey from
Bre'lyn Snipes which was answered with a couple of free throws and a trey from the Golden Tigers. Snipes leveled the score with a layup at the 8:29 mark to make the game 5-5.
Tuskegee took three minutes off the clock and moved to a 9-4 lead, but the Lady Cougars responded with a run of their own to level the game again. The Golden Tigers shifted back into control of the lead with a 14-9 advantage with 1:49 remaining. CSU surged in the final moments of the period to eventually claim a 16-15 lead, but Tuskegee knocked down a trey with 10 seconds to lead 18-16.
Second Quarter
Columbus State scored five points to open the first three minutes of the second period, taking a 21-18 lead. A trey from
Olonna Rawls at the 6:28 mark kept the Lady Cougars in control of a four-point lead, however Tuskegee put together an 11-0 response over the next three minutes to lead 31-24.
The Lady Cougars battled down the stretch and eventually pulled within two points at the half. Tuskegee went into the intermission with a narrow 33-31 lead.
Third Quarter
The Golden Tigers moved further ahead in the third with a 7-0 run to open the period. Rawls and the Lady Cougars responded with four points to pull within a five-point deficit.
Tuskegee would eventually move to a 10-point lead in the period, yet Columbus State continued to fight. The Lady Cougars would move the deficit to just three points with less than 30 seconds on the clock, but a pair of free throws from the hosts closed the period with a 50-45 scoreline.
Fourth Quarter
Unfortunately for the Lady Cougars, the Golden Tigers did just enough to remain at a distance. Columbus State fought back to pull the game within a possession several times in the period but could never get over the hump. Tuskegee would go on to hold the lead and secure the win over CSU.
Inside the Numbers
- The Lady Cougars finished shooting for 39.6% (21-of-53) from the field, 23.8% (5-of-21) from three, and 82.6% (19-of-23) from the foul line.
- Rawls led the scoring efforts with 27 points and led with a team-high six steals.
- Letiya Reeves scored 21 points and tallied four steals as well.
- Snipes tallied 13 points to round out the scoring in double figures.
- Sophia Williams led the rebounding efforts with seven boards.
- The Golden Tigers led 45-34 off the glass.
- CSU gave up 23 turnovers while Tuskegee gave up 22.
- The Lady Cougar defense notched 16 steals, scoring 20 points off turnovers.
