No. 2 Women’s Soccer Wins in Convincing Fashion at USC Beaufort

CSU goes unblemished in PBC play for sixth time in program history

BLUFFTON, S.C. – The No. 2-ranked Columbus State Women's Soccer program closed out Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Bluffton, S.C. with a 2 p.m. ET match at USC Beaufort.

The Lady Cougars (15-0-1, 9-0-0 PBC) defeated the Sand Sharks (7-5-4, 3-4-2 PBC) in convincing fashion at Fin Land Field. Sarah Hungerford's hat trick helped lift CSU to the ninth and final conference win of the season.

First Half

Both teams took some time to settle into the match as neither team managed to produce any concrete chances towards goal. It wasn't until the 9th minute where Emma Beddow and the Lady Cougars found their first shot on frame. Unfortunately for CSU, the shot was saved by USCB's Emily Worrell in goal.

Columbus State's second shot of the match would go on to land in the net as Hungerford laced a shot into the upper 90 of the goal for her eighth of the season with an assisted effort from Abigail Akerson. With the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, the Lady Cougars' attack followed with another saved attempt by Beddow in the 15th minute and a missed shot by Hungerford in the 16th minute.

USCB struggled with their offensive production early as the CSU defense managed to hold the hosts without a shot until the 19th minute. USCB registered an attempt toward goal with Heidi Harris recording a save to deny the equalizer.

In the 21st minute, the Lady Cougar duo of Michelle Medina and Lauren Barnes were on a counter with what seemed to be a golden opportunity for a second score. However, Barnes' shot on frame was denied by a big save from Worrell to keep the Sand Sharks within reach.

Within the next five minutes, CSU would register several shots on goal, but Worrell continued to come up clutch for USCB. Luck would eventually run out for the hosts as a foul in the box gave Vanessa Aviles a prime opportunity from the penalty spot. She would go on to convert the penalty and move the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute.

In the final few minutes, shots from Elle Henschel and Kendal Coreil were denied by Worrell to close out the half. CSU finished with a 13-1 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes of play, leading 10-1 in shots on goal as well.

Second Half

Just moments into the second half, CSU began laying pressure to the USC Beaufort defense as Faith Knoedler recorded a shot on goal. Minutes later Hungerford slotted home a solo effort for a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Over the next few minutes, Columbus State continued to keep the foot on the gas ripping five shots until a fourth goal would fall in the 58th minute with Hungerford notching a hat trick effort.

Action would slow for quite a while with both teams making mass substitutions to help relieve the squads. Shots from USCB would fly toward CSU's goal with Roxy Mathews replacing Harris. Mathews notched a save in the 78th minute while the Sand Shark's other attempt would rattle off the woodwork.

Worrell would notch two more saves as a shot from Ansley Caldwell in the 81st minute and the other from Madelynn Neace in the 82nd would land between the posts. That was the last couple of chances on goal before time would run out and the Lady Cougars would close out PBC play with an unblemished 9-0 record.
