Women’s Soccer Secures Southeast Regional Title With 2-0 Win Over North Georgia

CSU is set to host the NCAA Quarterfinals on Dec. 7

COLUMBUS – The Walden Soccer Complex welcomed a pair of familiar foes on Sunday afternoon as the top-seeded and second-ranked Columbus State women's soccer team hosted third-seeded North Georgia for the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Third Round.

The Lady Cougars (22-0-1) defeated the Nighthawks (13-4-3) in a 2-0 victory to secure the program's eighth Southeast Regional Championship Title and a hosting berth for the quarterfinals of the national tournament on Dec. 7.

First Half

The game opened with a period of measuring the match and testing the waters as both teams worked to find a rhythm. Columbus State ripped the first shot of the match in the 6th minute as a pass from Faith Knoedler found the feet of Vanessa Aviles who slotted home the goal for the early lead.

CSU remained in a threatening position after the first goal, following up in the 8th minute with Emma Beddow's header knocking off the top woodwork. Beddow added another shot to her tally moments later but missed the mark.

Over the course of the first half, CSU continued to attack and register shots but none hitting on frame until Elle Henschel's shot in the 34th minute which was denied by Sierra Fowler in goal. Columbus State held a dominant 10-0 edge in total shots with two on goal.

Second Half

Columbus State pounced early with a goal at the 46:43 mark as Emma Beddow bent a beautiful shot from outside the box and into the far side upper 90 to lift the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 lead. Knoedler poked a shot toward goal in the 57th minute to register another shot on goal for CSU.

Sarah Hungerford nearly netted the third goal of the match in the 75th minute, but Fowler made a fantastic leaping effort to knock away the threat. Fortunately for the Lady Cougars, the backline did tremendously well in denying any potential threats from the Nighthawks. CSU allowed just four total shots with zero landing on goal, leading 8-4 in the half.
