LAKELAND, Fla. – Columbus State University women's basketball took on Eckerd (Fla.) in Lakeland, Fla. this afternoon for a non-conference showdown.
The Lady Cougars (6-3) slipped in a 64-53 loss to the Tritons (6-2) on the campus of Florida Southern College.
First Quarter
Columbus State opened with a bucket from
Letiya Reeves followed by a trey from
Bre'lyn Snipes. CSU answered a trey from the Tritons with a lay from Snipes to lead 7-3 with 8:44 on the clock. Eckerd eventually leveled the game with a layup and a three of their own to make the score 8-8. CSU finished the first period with a 14-12 advantage as
Zuzanna Rudenko led the way down the stretch with four points.
Second Quarter
After an opening bucket from Snipes, Eckerd responded with an 8-0 run to capture a 20-16 lead with less than five minutes to play. Columbus State struggled shooting in the second period, scoring just three buckets total. The Tritons outscored the Lady Cougars 12-6 to lead 24-20 at the halftime break.
Third Quarter
The Lady Cougars leveled the game at 24-24 early in the third period with free throws from Reeves and a layup from Snipes. Unfortunately for CSU, the Tritons took advantage of the shooting woes of the Lady Cougars and went on a 13-2 run to lead by 11 points with less than four minutes left. The hosts totaled a game-high of 26 points in the third period moving to a 50-34 lead with just the fourth period to play.
Fourth Quarter
Columbus State outscored Eckerd in the fourth, but it was not enough to comeback from the deficit. The Lady Cougars were under a double-digit deficit for most of the period, clawing back to a 60-52 deficit with 90 seconds remaining. The Tritons scored two more buckets to ice the game and win 64-53.
Inside the Numbers
- The Lady Cougars struggled on Saturday, shooting for just 26.2% (17-of-65) from the field, 15.8% (3-of-19) from three, and 59.3% (16-of-27) from the foul line.
- Snipes led CSU's scoring efforts with 19 points while Reeves scored 11.
- Snipes led the way with four steals while Sophia Williams led off the glass with 10 rebounds.
- Jasmine Rai Stevens gathered three blocks.
