Lady Cougars Close Out December with Convincing Win Over Faulkner

CSU returns to winning ways to close out 2024

COLUMBUS – Columbus State University women's basketball hosted NAIA opponent Faulkner (Ala.) on Friday afternoon.
 
The Lady Cougars (7-3) defeated the Eagles (5-7) with a convincing 86-60 victory in the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center.
 
First Quarter
 
After an opening trey from the Eagles, CSU responded with a trey from Kristyn Goshay and five points from Bre'lyn Snipes to open with an 8-3 edge. For the remainder of the period, the two teams exchanged scores with the Lady Cougars outscoring the visitors 19-13 for a 27-16 lead. Haelim Adle led the scoring efforts in the final seven minutes with eight points followed by five from Zuzanna Rudenko.
 
Second Quarter
 
Columbus jumped well ahead of the Eagles in the second quarter, outscoring Faulkner 28-8 in the period. Letiya Reeves led the scoring with eight points as Olonna Rawls and Snipes notched six apiece. Four others notched two points as well. CSU finished the second period shooting 12-of-21 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three for a 55-24 lead at the break.
 
Third Quarter
 
Faulkner improved in the third quarter, outscoring CSU 20-16. Fortunately, for the Lady Cougars the large cushion from the first half helped to keep the Eagles at a good distance. Rawls scored seven points to lead Columbus State, followed by five from Rudenko. The Lady Cougars comfortably in control with a 71-44 lead.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
The final period was much closer in terms of scoring with Faulkner edging out Columbus State 16-15. Sophia Williams was the leading scorer for CSU in the fourth with four points. CSU slowed things down and allowed for the bench to get decent minutes in the game. The Lady Cougars closed with the 86-60 lead after going 7-of-19 from the field and 1-of-5 from three in the period.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Lady Cougars finished shooting for 40.2% (35-of-87) from the field, 38.2% (13-of-34) from three, and 27.3 & (3-of-11) from the foul line.
  • A total of four players scored double figures with Snipes leading with 16.
  • Reeves and Rawls notched 13 points each with Rudenko scoring 12.
  • Rawls led with five steals with Reeves notching four and Snipes with three.
  • Faulkner led 51-40 in rebounding with Snipes recording six for CSU.

  • Columbus State will close out the 2024 portion of the season and will return to action on Jan. 4 at Augusta (Ga.).
