Softball Drops Two on Day Two of the Eagle Classic

The Columbus State softball team fell 8-9 to Rollins College and 0-9 to Embry-Riddle.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Columbus State University softball team dropped both games on day two of the Eagle Classic to Rollins College and Embry-Riddle. With today's losses, Columbus State falls to 1-2 overall.

Game One - CSU 8, RC 9

As a team the Cougars tallied 10 hits with Brooke Miller leading the way going 2-for-3 at the plate with one home run and one double.

How It Happened

In the first inning, Columbus State took an early lead when Caitlyn Canady scored on a wild pitch after reaching first on an error by the second baseman.

Holly Lynn singled at the top of the second, advancing Brooke Miller to second after she drew a lead off the walk. Anna Waites then sent a ball into right field, reaching first on an error, allowing Lynn to advance to second and Miller to score. Kristen Odum was brought in to pinch run for Lynn and eventually scored on a wild pitch, putting the Cougars up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Rollins rallied back in the second inning, scoring three runs on a double down the left field line, driving home two Tars, and later scoring another on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

The Cougars made a pitching change in the bottom of the third inning, but the Tars remained undeterred, scoring two runs on three singles and one double to take a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Brooke Miller wasn't ready to give up just yet as she sent her first home run of the season over the left field wall, putting Columbus State within one run to lead things off in the top of the fourth. After an Odum single and another Cougar getting hit by a pitch, CSU was able to place a few runners on base but could not plate them.

Haylee Folds entered the circle for the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, Rollins had no intention of letting the Cougars catch up any further as G. Germer homered, bringing home three more Tars, making the score 8-4.

Rollins continued their offensive streak witha single up the middle in the fourth inning, allowing a Tar to score extending their lead even further at 9-4.

Columbus State's offense was not finished yet, as they scored four more runs in the fifth inning when Waites singled and brought Katelyn Cooper home. Nova Wright then hit a 3 RBI double to left field, bringing home Waites, Ansley Collins, and Laura Harris, pushing the score to within one.

Despite Columbus State's effort, Rollins ultimately won 9-8 to claim the victory.

Game Two - CSU 0, ERAU 9 (5 inn.)

Embry-Riddle took advantage of Columbus State's five errors throughout the game, which ultimately impacted the outcome to go in favor of the Eagles.

How It Happened

In the first inning, Laura Harris singled to open the Cougars' offense, but CSU could not push her across.

Embry-Riddle started the scoring in the second inning off of four hits and two errors.

The Eagles scored two more runs in the bottom of the third off two singles and one double.

Ansley Collins started things off in the top of the fourth with a single up the middle. Once again, the Cougar offense could not plate her and headed into the bottom of the fourth down 0-6.

ERAU made the score 9-0 on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the fourth.

Columbus State was unable to score in the top of the fifth, falling to Embry-Riddle by a run rule.
