Powerful Offense Lifts Cougars Past Chadron State, 11-5

Brooke Miller hit two home runs in Columbus State’s 11-5 win against Chadron State.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The No. 23 Columbus State University softball team ended their time in the Eagle Classic with an 11-5 win against Chadron State College Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cougars move to 2-2 on the season and hand the Eagles their first loss, dropping them to 0-1.

Haylee Folds earned her second victory in the circle for Columbus State, pitching a complete game while striking out seven and only allowing seven hits.

Ansley Collins and Brooke Miller had a day on offense for the Cougars. Collins was 4-for-5 with four singles and three RBIs. Miller hit two home runs, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and one single. As a team, Columbus State tallied 14 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Columbus State opened the scoring in the third inning, scoring three runs. After two singles from Katelyn Cooper and Ansley Collins, the Cougars found themselves with two runners on first and second with just one out. Brooke Miller then came up with her first big hit of the day, delivering her second home run of the season, clearing the bases, and putting the Cougars up 3-0.

CSU extended their lead in the fourth inning off the bat of Caitlyn Canady. She hit a double into center field, scoring Nova Wright. Collins then drove in Gracyn Gurley, who singled during her at bat, making the score 5-0 and passing the bat to the dangerous Miller.

Doing what she does best, Miller sends her third home run of the season and the second of the game over the left field wall, driving in two more runs for the Cougars. Columbus State went into the bottom of the fourth inning with a 7-0 lead over Chadron State.

The Eagles worked their way back into the game with a big inning in the fourth, scoring three runs, all of them coming from the long ball, making the score 7-3 headed into the fifth.

Designated player Ansley Collins had her third hit of the game and collected her second RBI in the top of the sixth off a single to center field, driving in Canady, making the score 8-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Cougars scored Brooke Thompson on an error committed by the center fielder after a pinch-hit single from Madison McDonald. Collins continued to dominate at the plate, recording her fourth single of the game and driving in Izzy Ripatti, who reached base on a single of her own. The last run of the game for the Cougars came on a Miller single to centerfield, scoring McDonald and making the score 11-3.

In a last-minute effort at the bottom of the seventh, Chadron State cut their deficit to six thanks to an RBI double and an RBI single from the Eagles.

Despite the fight from Chadron State, Columbus State came out on top and will head back to Columbus with the 11-5 win.
