Softball Closes Series with 7-5 Win Against Augusta

The Cougars closed out the series with Augusta defeating them 7-5, improving to 10-8 at home this season.

COLUMBUS - Columbus State University's softball team defeated Augusta University 7-5 to complete the series sweep at home. With the win, the Cougars improve to 18-12 overall (10-2 PBC), while the Jaguars fall to 12-21 overall (2-10 PBC). 

Julianna Franklin started in the circle for the Cougars, throwing 4.0 innings and striking out three while allowing only six hits and three earned runs. Franklin now stands at 7-3 on the season after earning the win for the Cougars.

 Haylee Folds entered the circle in the fifth inning for Columbus State and closed out the game, earning her first save of the season.

Brooke Miller led the way offensively for the Cougars, going 2-for-3 at the plate, hitting one triple, driving in four RBIs, and scoring one run. Katelyn Cooper went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs with a stolen base. 

How it Happened

The game started off with Augusta taking an early lead in the first inning. The Jaguars took a quick 3-0 lead after a Cougar error and a double to left center.

However, Columbus State quickly responded in the bottom of the first inning. Miller hit a triple down the right field line, driving in three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Grace Kiser then walked with the bases loaded, giving Columbus State a 4-3 lead.

Columbus State extended their lead in the third and fifth innings with Kara Wegienka driving in two more runs after reaching on an error and a double to left center field to make the score 6-3 heading into the sixth inning.

In the sixth inning, Augusta made a comeback attempt as C. Winder doubled down the left field line, bringing in two runs to narrow Columbus State's lead to 6-5.
But Columbus State added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Miller singled up the middle, scoring Cooper and securing a 7-5 victory over Augusta University. 

UP NEXT 

Columbus State will be back at Cougar Field Tuesday, March 19 for a doubleheader against Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) starting at 3 p.m.
