Baseball Splits Doubleheader with North Georgia

The Cougars lost game one but won 5-4 in the nightcap.

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Columbus State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Peach Belt Conference rival the University of North Georgia Saturday afternoon at UNG's Bob Stein Stadium. 

Game 1: CSU 7 UNG 13
  • North Georgia scored two runs in the second off of a home run and an RBI single, and five more runs in the third, featuring a grand slam and RBI single to give UNG a 7-0 lead over CSU
  • Win Johns put the Cougars on the board in the fourth, ripping a two-run home run to center field
  • The Nighthawks added two runs in the bottom of the fourth from another home run
  • In the fifth, Derek Wylie reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Jackson Chizek
  • Johns hit his second homer of the game in the sixth, making it 9-4
  • UNG scored four runs in the seventh off of four hits and a wild pitch
  • The Cougars tried to make a comeback in the eighth, scoring three runs to cut UNG's lead to five runs. Ian King grounded out to third, plating Kole McGlumphy, Andrew Rubin hit a RBI single to left field, and Wylie singled through the left side to pick up another RBI
  • Colton Joyner received the loss on the mound after 3.0 innings. Avery Stephens pitched 2.0 innings, striking out four batters and allowing one hit
  • Wylie finished with three hits, and Cody Ferguson, Johns and McGlumphy each tallied two
Game 2: CSU 5 UNG 4
  • Ferguson put CSU on board in the first inning with a leadoff home run, and McGlumphy singled to center to plate Rubin to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead
  • UNG scored three runs in the bottom of the first off of two hits and a CSU fielding error
  • CSU tied the game at three in the fourth inning when Chizek stole second base, getting caught stealing, allowing Luke Hasty to score from third
  • The Nighthawks took a 4-3 lead in the sixth thanks to a RBI double
  • Ferguson singled up the middle, scoring Chizek in the eighth to tie the game 4-4, and Johns hit his third homer of the day in the top of the ninth to put the Cougars ahead 5-4
  • Leo Giannoni received the win on the mound after 3.2 IP, six strikeouts and allowing one hit. He is now 2-0 on the season
  • Johns led CSU going 3-for-3 with two walks
The Cougars and Nighthawks will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
