Softball Grabs a Pair of Wins in Series Opener with USC Aiken

The Cougars defeated the Pacers 5-3 and 6-3 in two thrilling games on Saturday.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team won two exciting games against USC Aiken in the series opener this Saturday afternoon. The Cougars improve to 21-13 overall (12-2 PBC) with the wins, while the Pacers fall to 20-11 (5-6 PBC). 

Game One - CSU 5, USCA 3

In the first game of the series, both pitchers had excellent outings. Haylee Folds earned her sixth win by throwing a complete game, striking out six, and allowing only five hits and three runs. She improves to 7-3 overall on the season. 

In game one, Caitlyn Canady broke the all-time CSU record for the longest on-base streak. She has reached base in 29 consecutive games. 

How it Happened

In the top of the second inning, USC Aiken took an early lead when Dewalt doubled to left field, bringing in two runs. 

However, Columbus State quickly responded in the 4th inning with a home run by Lindsey Patton, narrowing the gap to just one run.

In the 5th inning, USC Aiken extended their lead with Dixon singling in another run to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Pacers. 

Columbus State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Canady's RBI single and Ansley Collins' double to left center. 

Ultimately, Columbus State emerged victorious with a final score of 5-3. 

Game Two - CSU 6, USCA 3

Kenzie Bayer and Brooke Miller led the Cougars offense, both hitting a long ball to help aid in the game two victory. Bayer led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBIs. 

Jessica Lopez (6-2) threw her first complete game of the season, earning the win in the circle for the Cougars. Lopez struck out seven and only gave up three hits and three runs in her sixth win of the season. 

How it Happened

USC Aiken took an early lead in the top of the third inning after a sacrifice fly to left field scored the game's first run. Then, after a single through the left side, USC Aiken went ahead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third. 

Columbus State quickly responded after Kristen Odum singled up the middle to score Canady, and Katelyn Cooper doubled to left center to score Odum, closing the gap.

In the fourth inning, Bayer blasted a home run to right field, giving Columbus State its first lead of the game, 4-3, heading into the fifth. 

The momentum continued for Columbus State in the fifth inning as Miller added two more runs with another home run. 

Despite USC Aiken's efforts to catch up, Columbus State held onto their lead and secured the victory with a final score of 6-3.

UP NEXT 

The Cougars will play the Pacers again on Sunday, March 24, for the final game of the series, with the first pitch at noon. The Cougars will also celebrate their ten seniors for Senior Day during and after the game.
