Baseball Sweeps Claflin on Alumni Day

CSU run-ruled the Panthers in game one and took game two 9-2.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University baseball team swept Peach Belt Conference foe Claflin University Saturday afternoon at Ragsdale Field. With the wins, the Cougars improve to 31-19 (17-10 PBC).

Game 1: CSU 11 CU 0
  • CSU took a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring two runs off an infield error
  • The Cougars scored seven runs in the second inning thanks to RBI singles from Andrew Rubin and Jackson Chizek, a grand slam from Derek Wylie and a bases loaded walk from Chizek, plating Seth Nelson
  • In the fourth, Cody Ferguson singled to left center to plate Rubin, and in the sixth, Ferguson reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Chizek
  • Colby Brabston, Wylie, Rubin and Chizek each tallied two hits. Trace Goforth collected the win on the mound after 5.0 innings, striking out six
Game 2: CSU 9 CU 2
  • Claflin took a 1-0 lead in the first off a single up the middle, however Win Johns homered in the next half inning to tie the game
  • In the third, CSU took a 4-1 lead thanks to home runs from Ferguson and Wylie
  • The Cougars extended the lead to 6-1 with a Wylie RBI single to left field and a sacrifice fly from Ian King, scoring Johns
  • In the sixth, CSU made it 9-1 thanks to a Johns two-run RBI single and Brabston scoring off a fielder's choice
  • The Panthers put another run on the board in the seventh with a ground out to the pitcher
  • Wylie led CSU with three hits and Colton Joyner received the win after 6.0 innings pitched
UP NEXT
The Cougars will wait for the bracket for the PBC Tournament to be released, which will be played May 3-5 at the two highest seeds.
