Cougars Drop Game One of the PBC Championship Series

After a two-hour rain delay, North Georgia’s fourth-inning outburst leads the Nighthawks to a 10-2 victory over the Cougars.

Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The two-seeded Columbus State University softball team lost game one of the Peach Belt Conference Championship series to the one-seeded North Georgia Nighthawks in five innings.

Kenzie Bayer led the way at the plate with one hit and two RBIs.

Haylee Folds (9-8) received the loss in the circle for the Cougars after throwing 3.2 innings while allowing six hits and five runs with one strikeout.

Scoring Summary

The Nighthawks jumped on an early lead in the bottom of the third inning with a solo shot to left field, scoring 1-0 in favor of UNG.

At the top of the fourth, Nova Wright found herself on second base before the rain rolled in, resulting in a two-hour rain delay.

After the delay, the Cougars resumed play, loading the bases for Kenzie Bayer. Bayer singled to center field, scoring Wright and Laura Harris to put CSU up 2-1 in the top of the fourth.

This fueled the Nighthawks, who returned to the plate and fired away. North Georgia scored seven runs off one home run, one double, and two singles, making the score 8-2 heading into the fifth.

Columbus State could not score, sending the Nighthawks to the plate with the run rule looming. North Georgia capitalized and pushed across two, ending the game in five innings.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will meet the Nighthawks in the second game of the championship series on Saturday, May 4, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. If necessary, the third game will be played immediately afterward.
