MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The third seed Columbus State University baseball team survives and advances in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament after losing the first game to Georgia College & State University, then defeating Augusta University in the nightcap, advancing to Sunday's game.
Game 1: CSU 5 GCSU 12
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to two singles from
Seth Nelson and
Kole McGlumphy, but the Bobcats tallied on two runs off of two sacrifice fly outs. CSU took a 4-2 lead in the top of third from a
Luke Hasty sac fly and a
Andrew Rubin single.
GCSU took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs off of three hits, then added two more runs in the fourth thanks to a CSU fielding error and a sac fly.Â
Win Johns hit a solo home run in the fifth to minimize GCSU's lead to three runs, however, the Bobcats scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it 12-5.
Trace Goforth received the loss on the mound and falls to 8-3 on the season. McGlumphy and
Cody Ferguson each recorded three hits for CSU.
Game 2: CSU 6 AU 5
Ian King put CSU on board in the top of the second inning thanks to a RBI single, plating Nelson. The game was 1-0 until the fifth when
Colby Brabston made it 2-0 with a RBI, scoring Rubin.Â
Augusta hit a three-run homer in the sixth to take a 3-2 over the Cougars, but King came through again, driving in a run with a single in the bottom of the inning. The Jaguars answered back in the seventh with two more runs, and a solo home run from
Derek Wylie put CSU within one run of the Jags.
In the eighth, the Cougars took the lead thanks to a RBI single from Rubin to center field and
Jackson Chizek laying down a perfect bunt and scored McGlumphy due to a catcher's error.Â
Leo Giannoni earned the win and is now 7-1 and
Peyton Burton collected his fifth save of the season after pitching one inning.
UP NEXT
CSU will face second seed GCSUÂ again on Sunday, May 5. The Cougars will have to win two games to advance to the PBC Tournament Championship series next weekend.
