COLUMBUS – No. 6-ranked Columbus State Women's Soccer welcomed Tusculum (Tenn.) to the Walden Soccer Complex for a midweek bout on Wednesday.
The Lady Cougars (5-0-0) blazed past the Pioneers (2-3-0) in commanding fashion in an 11-1 victory, producing nine different goal scorers in the process.
First Half
The visitors were able to press the Lady Cougars early and register the first shot of the match, yet CSU strengthened and notched two shots on goal from
Emma Beddow in the 4th minute to return the favor. Another shot on frame from Beddow followed by a shot on target by
Juanita Escobar would continue to pressure the Pioneers' keeper until
Lauren Barnes broke through in the 14th minute for a 1-0 advantage.
Beddow would go on to knock the woodwork in the 20th minute and assist
Faith Knoedler for the second goal of the match. The Lady Cougars continued to attack fiercely and would not be denied, scoring a third goal in the 31st minute with
Lizz Forshaw connecting a pass to
Abigail Akerson who slotted home the goal.
Columbus State added two more to the tally late in the half with
Michelle Medina finding a score in the 43rd minute and
Ui Suzuki scoring with the help of Medina in the 45th minute. CSU closed out the half with a 5-0 advantage, leading the Pioneers 20-2 in overall shots and 12-0 in shots on goal.
Second Half
Tusculum caught the Lady Cougars on their heels to open the second half, scoring in the 47th minute as Tanna Bookhamer finished a fantastic long ball from Aniya Fisher to cut the deficit to four goals.
The Pioneers brought on a new keeper in the second half in Noemie Tartrou. She would notch saves off shots from Escobar in the 51st minute and Knoedler in the 52nd minute before coming up big in a penalty situation. The visiting keeper would go on to deny Beddow from the penalty spot in the 61st minute to keep the 5-1 scoreline.
After a couple more shots on target from Beddow, the Lady Cougars found the first goal of the second half with the connection of Forshaw to Medina for her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute. With a 6-1 advantage, Columbus State continued with momentum in the 66th minute, with a seventh score coming from the foot of
Vanessa Aviles with the assist from
Mia Robinson.
Forshaw gathered her third assist of the match in the 76th minute, dishing the ball off to
Elle Henschel for the 8-1 lead. Just moments later, CSU found the back of the net again with a solo effort from Robinson with a laser from outside the 18-yard box for a 9-1 advantage.
In the 85th minute, Forshaw found the back of the net for her own score assisted by
Sophia Leal for a 10-1 lead. The Lady Cougars closed out the match with one final goal from Suzuki in the 89th minute as Leal assisted her second of the match to finish with an 11-1 advantage.
Columbus State dominated the second half with a 21-1 shot differential while also leading 15-1 in shots on goal.
Huda Sayedzada and
Roxy Mathews split duties in goal for the second half for the Lady Cougars after
Heidi Harris opened in the first 45 minutes of play.
Inside the Numbers
- CSU finished in dominant fashion, leading the match 41-3 in overall shots and 27-1 in shots on goal.
- The Pioneers' duo in goal recorded a total of 16 saves.
- Forshaw dished out three assists and bagged her first goal of the season, finishing with five shots overall with four on goal.
- Nine different goal scorers found the back of the net with both Medina and Suzuki scoring twice.
- Leal recorded a pair of assists with Robinson and Medina both notching one each.
