Columbus State Cages Up the Bearcats with a 74-65 Win

The Cougars make this their fifth win in a row

Greenwood, S.C. – The #19-ranked Columbus State men's basketball team traveled up to Greenwood, S.C. to Lander University (S.C.) for a Peach Belt Conference matchup.  

The Cougars (15-2, 6-1 PBC) snatched up a win in a close game against Lander (10-7, 4-3 PBC). With this win, the men move their streak to five consecutive wins.  

First Half  

Kordell Brown started the game for the Cougars with a layup assisted by Jarrett Adderton. Five minutes into the game, CSU and Lander dueled for points as Wisdom Uboh and Brown both scored followed by baskets from Lander making the score 13-10.  

Lander tied the game at 15 with 13:10 in the game. Masiah Jones came into the game and almost immediately makes a dunk to add nine to their score. With the Bearcats creeping up, Lander moved down the court with looks to get ahead, but Roman Son stole the ball for a turn around score by Jordan Mitchell to make the score 22-17.  

With two minutes left in the game, Lander led by one point with a good three-pointer, but Uboh responded with his fifth point of the game. The Cougars left for the locker room at the end of the half leading 37-36.

Second Half 

Lander started the second half scoring back-to-back until Son made his tenth point of the game with a point from the charity line. Scoring between the two teams continued to go back and forth with the score at 48-46, Cougars leading.  

Reigning PBC Player of the Week Jehloni James re-entered into the game at the 10-minute mark and made an instant impact. With a layup, a block, two defensive rebounds, and an assist he helped boost the Cougars to an eight-point lead.

To close out the game, CSU went on a seven-point streak with Son and Joshua Guilford working together to make the score 69-54. With the clock ticking down, the Bearcats lost hope of making a comeback. Adderton and Uboh sealed the deal with three successful free throws for the Cougars to drive home with a 74-65 win.  

Inside the Numbers  

  • CSU finished shooting 43.8% (28-of-64) from the field, 23.5% (4-of-17) in three pointers, and 66.7% (14-of-21) in free throws.  

  • The Cougars totaled seven steals in the game with Son, Adderton, and Uboh all had two steals.  

  • Adderton and Son led in points with 16 each with Adderton shooting for 66.7% (6-of-9) and going 4-of-4 in all his free throws.
  • Brown followed with 14 points with Uboh scoring 11.

  • Lander led the game in turnovers with 14.  

  • Columbus State had a total of 43 rebounds during the game with 30 defensive rebounds and 13 offensive rebounds.

  • The Cougars host USC Beaufort at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center on Jan. 29 with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. ET.
