COLUMBUS – Columbus State University women's basketball opened Peach Belt Conference action in the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center for the first time this season, hosting Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday night.
The Lady Cougars (8-4, 2-1 PBC) bounced back into the win column with an 85-72 victory over the Hurricanes (5-6, 1-2 PBC) on Herbert Greene Court.
First Quarter
The first quarter opened with back-and-forth play resulting in a 9-9 ballgame with six minutes on the clock. Columbus State surged with an 18-6 run over the next six minutes, shooting 7-of-14 from the field in the process. The Lady Cougars closed the first period with a 27-15 lead with
Sophia Williams and
Olonna Rawls leading the charge with four points each.
Second Quarter
Georgia Southwestern flipped the script by outscoring Columbus State 23-8 in the period to lead 38-35 heading into the half. GSW shot 8-of-17 from the field, 3-of-6 from three, and 4-of-4 from the foul line while CSU made just three field goals.
Simone Lett led the way with four points followed by two points from both
Aaliyah Ferrell and
Samara Saunders.
Third Quarter
In the opening couple of minutes, CSU erased the deficit with a 10-3 run to lead 45-41. The Lady Cougars finished the quarter by besting the Hurricanes with a 22-12 stretch of scoring that covered six minutes. Columbus State closed with a 67-53 lead as
Kristyn Goshay knocked down nine points from beyond-the-arc while
Zuzanna Rudenko followed with six points alongside Rawls.
Fourth Quarter
Columbus State's double-digit advantage was held comfortably in the fourth as both teams finished in back-and-forth action. GSW led the period 19-18, but Lett's eight points and Ferrell's four helped secure the Lady Cougar's second PBC victory this season with the 85-72 final score.
Inside the Numbers
- The Lady Cougars finished shooting for 41.3% (33-of-80) from the field, 34.6% (9-of-26) from three, and 83.3% (10-of-12) from the charity stripe.
- Lett led the offensive production with 18 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field, adding three rebounds and an assist.
- Rawls and Goshay followed with 12 points each.
- Rawls tallied five boards, four assists, and four steals.
- Goshay went 4-of-8 from three, adding two assists as well.
- Letiya Reeves totaled 11 points to round out the scorers in double figures, leading with five assists on the night.
- CSU's defense totaled 16 steals on 32 turnovers from GSW, scoring 33 points in the process.
- The Lady Cougars utilized 44 points in the paint and 37 points from the bench.
