COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University Men's Basketball team closed out the calendar year with an 80–71 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta University on Saturday night inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center.
Columbus State set the tone early with efficient shooting and never trailed. The Cougars shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first half and 53.8 percent overall, using steady offensive flow and timely stops to maintain control throughout the contest.
Marlon Smith led all scorers with a game-high 27 points, connecting on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while knocking down five three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Smith also pulled down nine rebounds and added four assists in an all-around performance.
Lee Langstaff II followed with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while
Pascal Volz contributed nine points and four assists.
Jordan Mitchell added eight points and anchored the defense with five blocked shots, and
Jaylen Harris chipped in seven points off the bench.
Nathan Eroh provided six points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting effort.
As a team, Columbus State finished 28-for-52 from the field and 8-for-16 from three-point range, while scoring 36 points in the paint and 19 points in transition. The Cougars also converted 14 points off turnovers and received 16 points from the bench.
With the win, Columbus State improves to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in Peach Belt Conference play. The team will resume Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday, January 7, traveling to Aiken, S.C., to face the USCA at the Convocation Center, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
