INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Columbus State men's tennis took on the ITA DII Men's Team Indoor Championships in Indianapolis over the weekend, dropping three games to some of the country's top talent.
The fifth-ranked Cougars (3-3) competed as the fourth seed in the tournament and opened with a match between seventh-ranked and fifth-seeded Rollins (Fla.) on Friday morning.
CSU won just two singles matches in a 4-2 loss versus the Tars (3-0) as Benedek Szombathelyi defeated Pete Tran at #4 singles (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) and Andrea Sandrone defeated Mo Anterist at #5 singles (6-3, 6-4).
Columbus State followed with a consolation match against the third-ranked and top-seeded Saint Leo (Fla.) on Saturday morning, dropping a 4-3 loss. Samer Al Tori picked up wins of 6-4 and 6-3 at #2 singles followed by Camilo Cano's wins of 6-2 and 7-5 in #3 singles. Elias Peter followed with 6-4 and 6-1 wins at #6 singles.
The Cougars wrapped up the weekend in Indianapolis with the seventh-place match against UIndy (Ind.) who is ranked 12th nationally and was the sixth seed in the tournament. CSU fell 4-3 to UIndy. Columbus State picked up the doubles point with #1 doubles pairing of Peter and Sandrone picking up a 6-3 win while Cano and Al Tori won 6-3 in #3 doubles.
Sandrone and Peter were the lone singles who won matches against UIndy. Sandrone secured #5 singles (6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4)) and Peter won #6 singles (6-3, 6-1).
