Women’s Basketball Sneaks Away with 78-77 Win at USC Beaufort

CSU comes away with a narrow victory on the road

BLUFFTON, S.C. – Columbus State women's basketball traveled to Bluffton, S.C. for the final road trip of the regular season in a Peach Belt Conference duel at USC Beaufort on Wednesday night.
 
The Lady Cougars (19-7, 13-4 PBC) avoided danger with a one-point win against the Sand Sharks (6-19, 4-13) to move to a two-game winning streak with one game to play in the regular season.
 
First Quarter
 
Both teams battled in a tightly contested game after Columbus State opened with a 7-3 lead in the first two minutes of action. USCB fought hard to remain within a one-point deficit, taking an 11-8 run over the next three minutes. Treys from Letiya Reeves and Zuzanna Rudenko led the way for the Lady Cougars. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the period with Rudenko scoring the last bucket to tie the game at 24-24.
 
Second Quarter
 
Columbus State surged with a 12-5 run in the first four and a half minutes, led by Reeves with three points and four others with two points apiece. CSU went 5-of-9 from the floor in the run to lead 36-29. The Sand Sharks answered with four and half minutes of their own run, outscoring the Lady Cougars 11-4 to tie the game at 40-all. Fortunately, Olonna Rawls laid one in in the dying moments to give CSU a 42-40 advantage at the break.
 
Third Quarter
 
The Lady Cougars came out of the half time break swinging and landing an 8-0 blow to the hosts, moving to a 50-40 lead. Despite a 6-2 surge in scoring from USCB, CSU managed to respond with a 9-3 run led by five points from Bre'lyn Snipes to lead 61-49 with 3:21 to play in the period. The Sand Sharks battled with a 13-4 run down the final two-minute stretch to pull the deficit down to three. However, Rawls knocked down a floater to give CSU a 67-62 lead.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
The fourth quarter ended up being a tightly contested period of play with CSU edging out the first six minutes with a 9-7 stretch. USCB held the Lady Cougars to just two points in the final few minutes while scoring eight themselves to pull within a 78-77 deficit with less than a minute to play. Fortunately for the Lady Cougars, the Sand Sharks ran out of time and were unable to finish off the game with a win.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Lady Cougars finished the night shooting for 42.9% (30-of-70) from the field, 34.6% (9-of-26) from three, and 60% (9-of-15) from the foul line.
  • CSU captured two of the four period, outscoring USCB 18-16 in the second and 25-22 in the third. Both tied the first at 24-24 while USCB outscored CSU 15-11 in the fourth.
  • Three players scored in double figures for CSU with Rawls leading the charge with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Reeves followed with 16 points and a team-best seven assists while Snipes scored 12 points.
  • The Lady Cougar defense took six steals on 21 USCB turnovers, scoring 16 points in the process.
  • Both teams notched 37 rebounds each.
  • CSU moves to a 4-0 record versus the Sand Sharks.
