Lady Cougars Defeat Georgia College 70-68 On Senior Day

CSU ends the regular season with a win at home

COLUMBUS – Columbus State women's basketball defeated Georgia College 70-68 on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Cougars ended the regular season with a  20-7 (14-4 PBC) record. 

First Quarter  

Simone Lett opened the game with a two-point jumper in the first ten seconds. Olonna Rawls led the quarter with five points while Lett and Letiya Reeves followed with four points apiece. The Cougars ended the quarter with a 15-7 lead as they shot 35.3% from the field. 

Second Quarter 

After an opening three-pointer for the Bobcats, Rawls responded with a jumper for her seventh point of the game. The Cougars went on a 6-0 run and held the Bobcats scoreless for four minutes. Georgia College fought back after falling behind for the entire quarter and lessened the deficit to just four points at the end of the quarter.

Third Quarter 

Georgia College opened the half with back-to-back three-pointers to take their first lead of the game. After a scoreless three and a half minutes, Rawls produced two points followed by a Kristyn Goshay three-pointer to take back the lead 35-34. The Lady Cougars struggled as they shot 3-17 from the field and ended the quarter trailing by five points.

Fourth Quarter 

After tying the game 54-54, Columbus State regained the lead with the help of Zuzuanna Rudenko. Rudenko drained two three-pointers and a layup in a span of fifty-eight seconds to go up 66-59. The Bobcats continued to claw their way back as they drained a jumper to tie the game 68-68 with twelve seconds remaining on the clock. With three seconds on the clock, Rawls sealed the game with a layup and a steal to give the Lady Cougars a 70-68 win on senior day. 

Inside the Numbers

  • The Lady Cougars finished shooting for 34.6% (27-78) from the field, 25.9% (7-27) from the three, and 60% (9-15) from the foul line.                  
  • CSU collected twenty-six points off of the Bobcat's twenty-three turnovers.
  • Rawls led with sixteen points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
  • Rudenko collected ten points in the final five minutes of the game.
