COLUMBUS, GA. – Columbus State University softball teams improved to 5-1 after sweeping Union University (0-7) during the Lady Cougars weekend home opener.
Senior Julianna Franklin threw a no-hitter in 5.0 innings, striking out eight and giving up zero walks. The left-handed pitcher earned her fourth win of the season, improving to 4-0 in the circle.
Columbus State 9, Union 0
Union struck first by getting three Bulldogs on base due to three Columbus State errors. However, they could not capitalize off these errors as Franklin landed two strikeouts to get out of the top of the inning.
The Lady Cougars struck early in the first inning when Nova Wright hit a home run out to left center field, bringing in Ansley Collins to home plate. Franklin's three strikeouts in the first inning fueled the remaining innings as she was able to, respectably, and quickly get out of the next four innings.
CSU came out swinging in the second inning as Holly Lynn recorded her first home run of the season. Avery Hays hit a double allowing Kara Wegienka to advance to third. Brooke Thompson brought in Wegienka off a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0 for the Lady Cougars. Mary-Catherine Sorrell singled then stole second, allowing Avery Hays to score off a throwing error by the Bulldogs catcher. CSU earned their last score of the second inning when Wright hit a sacrifice fly out to center field which brought in Sorrell to end the inning 6-0.
Anna Waites got her name on the scoresheet in the third inning after hitting a single and being brought into home plate off a sacrifice fly from Hays. The fourth inning allowed the Lady Cougars to go up 9-0 against the Bulldogs. Lynn up at the plate, singled to center field allowing Gracyn Gurley and McDonald to score two unearned runs.
