Baseball Takes Game Two Against Sand Sharks In 10 Innings

CSU wins 4-3 with a homer in the 10th inning

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – After falling to a 3-1 deficit, Columbus State University baseball battled in a tightly-contested game at USC Beaufort on Saturday and won a 10-inning stunner to lead the weekend conference series 2-0.

The Cougars (15-15, 6-8 PBC) fought the Sand Sharks (4-26, 1-13 PBC) by chipping away one run an inning to secure a 4-3 victory in extras.

Columbus State 4, USC Beaufort 3

Columbus State notched a hit in both the first and second innings but were left scoreless heading into the third frame. The Cougars eventually found a score in the top of the third with a lead-off double from Luke Miller to get things started. Cole Eison would go on to drive Miller home with a single to center for the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the Sand Sharks would produce four hits to score three runs, taking advantage of a CSU error in the process. After an empty fourth from both sides, Miller would help CSU to pull within a run on a solo shot over the right field wall in the top half of the fifth. Singles from Ian King and Eison followed, but the duo were left stranded to close the inning.

The Cougars left two stranded in the seventh and one in the eighth which resulted in scoreless affairs. The ninth frame was cut and dry with no offense, forcing extra innings. A lead-off home run from Warrick Wilmot was just what the Cougars needed to take a 4-3 advantage in the 10th inning. USC Beaufort notched two singles in the bottom half of the inning, but the Cougars held tough to secure game two of the series.
