Box Score 4 MELBOURNE, Fla. – Columbus State softball traveled down to Melbourne, Florida for the Space Coast Spring Games and opened the three-day event with two wins on Friday and a pair of victories on Saturday.
The Lady Cougars (18-5) secured an 8-4 victory over Wheeling (W. Va.) and a 3-1 win over Goldey-Beacom (Del.) on Friday. CSU followed on Saturday with 10-6 and 10-2 wins over Ursuline (Ohio) and Walsh (Ohio), respectively.
Game One | Columbus State 8, Wheeling 4
The Lady Cougars came from behind a 3-0 deficit in the opening three frames to capture a 4-3 lead in the fifth. In the fourth,
Gracyn Gurley notched an RBI single to begin the comeback efforts before a two-RBI triple from
Nova Wright tied the game in the fifth.
Anna Waites reached on an error and CSU added another on the board to lead by one.
Wheeling tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but a sacrifice bunt from
Brooke Thompson in the sixth and a two-RBI double from Gurley in the seventh captured an 8-4 victory for CSU.
Gurley, Ripatti, and Wright all led with two hits while Gurley drove in three runs and Wright pushed in two. CSU led 10-6 in total hits which included three doubles and a triple.
Julianna Franklin opened with three innings in the circle and struck out five batters in the process.
Khloe Shears and
Lily Miller split the final four innings of action with Miler securing her seventh win of the season in closing position.
Game Two | Columbus State 3, Goldey-Beacom 1
Columbus State edged out Goldey-Beacom in a 3-1 victory of the nightcap on Friday, led by a strong performance from Miller in the circle. After slipping in a 1-0 deficit in the first, CSU responded with an RBI single from Ripatti to tie the game.
In the fifth, Waites notched a two-RBI base hit to score
Mary-Catherine Sorrell and Ripatti for a 3-1 advantage. GBC finished with a 9-8 edge in hits. Ripatti led CSU with two hits while Waites led with two RBIs. Miller picked up another victory after tossing for a complete game, striking out five batters and allowing one earned run.
Game Three | Columbus State 10, Ursuline 6
After falling to a one-run deficit early, CSU surged into a 4-1 lead with an RBI double from
Madison McDonald and another score off an error in the third followed by a score off a wild pitch and an RBI single from
Carlee Wilson in the fourth.
The Lady Cougars blew the doors off their lead with six runs in the sixth inning to lead 10-1 highlighted by a two-RBI single from Wilson, an RBI triple from
Madison Hanchey and a two-run homer from
Madison Norrell. Ursuline fought back in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring five runs to close with a 10-6 deficit.
CSU led 12-8 in hits with McDonald, Waites, and Wilson notching two hits apiece while Wilson led with three RBIs. Gurley picked up her first win of the season, starting the first four innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits, walking one and striking out one.
Game Four | Columbus State 10, Walsh 2
McDonald led the charge in the final game on Saturday with four RBIs on two triples in the 10-2 win over Walsh. CSU scored four runs in the second inning and followed with two in the fifth and four in the sixth to invoke the run-rule. Waites also picked up three RBIs with a double and a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Khloe Shears started the first four innings and earned the win after allowing two earned runs on three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Miller closed the game with two innings pitched, two hits allowed, and three strikeouts.
