DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Number eight-ranked North Georgia welcomed Columbus State softball to "The Hill" on Saturday for a doubleheader to continue Peach Belt Conference action.
The Lady Cougars (28-22, 7-11 PBC) dropped both games to the Nighthawks (37-8, 16-2 PBC), struggling to finish off comeback efforts.
Game One | Columbus State 2, North Georgia 11
The Lady Cougars scored in the top of the second with a single to right center field from
Ella Hopper.
Rylie Beddingfield pitch ran for Hopper, and stole second base. Beddingfield was moved up to third base on a bunt from
Aubree Ussery, and
Abrianna Green hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Beddingfield.
Nothing would happen in the following two innings as North Georgia would eventually take a 11-1 advantage in the bottom half of the fourth inning. A solo homer to left center field in the fifth inning from
Mary-Catherine Sorrell would be the only production CSU's offense would muster as the Nighthawks took the 11-2 victory.
Quick Hits
- Sorrell gathered her fourth homer of the season as one of four CSU hits for the game.
Game Two | Columbus State 12, North Georgia 17
Despite falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, CSU's offense scored 12 runs in the second game. The Lady Cougars struggled with pitching and ended the day with a 17-12 defeat in game two.
The Nighthawks produced three hits scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning for a quick three-run lead.
Columbus State would get its first run of the game from a homer to left field by
Holly Lynn.
Anna Waites notched a double to right center bringing home a run, and Green recorded a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Beddingfield.
The Cougars offense added nine runs over the next five innings, but the Nighthawks' early scoring in the first two innings was the difference maker.
Quick Hits
- Sorrell, Wright, Gurley, and Waites led game two with two hits with two others notching hits.
- Sorrell, Wright, and Waites all hit doubles.
