DAHLONEGA, Ga. – No. 12-ranked Columbus State women's tennis traveled north on Monday for a big Peach Belt Conference clash at No. 11-ranked North Georgia.
The Lady Cougars (11-5, 3-1 PBC) fell short to the Nighthawks (14-6, 4-1 PBC) in a 4-3 defeat at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek in Dahlonega, Ga.
Columbus State opened with dominance, sweeping all three doubles matches for the first team point. All three matches were secured with 6-4 wins. Isadora Oliveira and Laura Pesickova finished first at #2 doubles followed by Nikoline Gullacksen and Mariana Ramirez at #1 doubles. Majra Djokic and Annie Adams wrapped up doubles play in the third line.
The Lady Cougars went up 2-0 over the Nighthawks with Pesickova's 6-2, 6-4 wins over Vasiliss Kupriyanova at #3 singles. Unfortunately for CSU, UNG bounced back to level the match with wins over Oliveira at #4 singles and Ramirez at #2 singles, both matches went three sets. Oliveira opened with a 6-0 win and dropped sets of 6-1 and 6-4. For Ramirez, she fell behind 6-1 and bounced back with a 6-4 win before slipping 6-0 in set three.
North Georgia continued their momentum into #1 singles with a three-set win over Gullacksen followed by another three-set victory at #6 singles over Djokic. Gullacksen fought hard to level the match with a 6-1 second set but fell 6-2 set three. Djokic bounced back from a tough first set and won her second set 6-3 but ultimately fell with a 6-1 set three. Sofia Lauretti fought hard at #5 singles, winning sets two and three, 7-5, 7-5. She opened with a 7-1 tiebreaker loss but secured CSU' third team point to drop the match 4-3.
