COLUMBUS — The 10th-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team defeated No. 36 Georgia College on Wednesday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center, marking its fourth Peach Belt Conference win of the season.
The Lady Cougars (12-5, 4-1 PBC) claimed the doubles point behind a pair of strong victories over the Bobcats (13-5, 3-3 PBC), and followed with several tight wins in singles play.
CSU honored two special members of the program for their many years being with the Lady Cougars.
Mariana Ramirez and
Isadora Oliveira were recognized prior to the start of the contest.
Mariana Ramirez and
Nikoline Gullacksen took down Georgia College's Chiara Santoro and Rachel Black 6-2 at the top spot, followed closely by
Isadora Oliveira and
Laura Pesickova's 6-2 win over Jada Young and Victoria Vendrell at No. 2. The No. 3 tandem of
Majra Djokic and
Annie Adams led 5-2 before their match was left unfinished, as CSU had already clinched the point.
In singles play, Gullacksen opened the scoring with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Santoro at the No. 1 position. Georgia College answered with a win at No. 6, where Natalie Kirka defeated Djokic 6-4, 6-1.
Columbus State remained in control as Oliveira earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Black at No. 4. The Bobcats narrowed the gap again with Ashley Bentz's 7-6 (6-0), 6-4 win over Pesickova at No. 3. However, CSU sealed the match with wins in the final two matches.
Sofia Lauretti prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 over Vendrell at No. 5, and Ramirez completed a comeback win at No. 2, rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Young.
