COLUMBUS – No. 19-ranked Columbus State men's welcomed No. 28-ranked Georgia College to the John W. Walden Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon for the home finale in a Peach Belt Conference matchup.
The Cougars (10-9, 3-1 PBC) took care of business against the Bobcats (13-4, 2-3 PBC), winning a 5-2 match on their home courts.
CSU opened the match with a sweep in doubles to secure the first point. At No. 1,
Andrea Sandrone and
Elias Peter teamed up for a 6-3 win over Chase Martin and Rodrigo Perez Crespo. The Cougars clinched the point with another 6-3 win on court two from
Benedek Szombathelyi and
Yike Liu, who defeated Luka Sauer Jimenez and Noe Villen. At No. 3 doubles,
Camilo Cano and
Samer Al Tori rounded out the sweep with a 6-3 victory over Gabe Cizek and Thomas Brewer.
In singles, Columbus State kept the momentum going, claiming four of the six matches. However, the Bobcats managed to level the match first with a win at No. 1 singles, taking the first line 6-4, 6-1 over Cano. Fortunately, the Cougars responded with three-straight wins to clinch the match.
Peter began the run with a 6-2, 6-2 performance at No. 5 singles followed by Szombathelyi taking No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2. Al Tori was dominant on court two, cruising past his opponent 6-2, 6-2 to earn the clinching point. Wrapping up singles play, Liu captured No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2 and was followed by Sandrone's 7-5, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles.
