Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Fort Valley

The Lady Cougars win 5-1 and 8-5 over the Wildcats

COLUMBUS – Columbus State softball hosted Fort Valley State (Ga.) on Wednesday evening for a non-conference matchup at Cougar Field.

The Lady Cougars (28-19) downed the Wildcats (17-19) in a doubleheader sweep, winning game one 5-1 and the second contest 8-5.

Game One - Columbus State 5, Fort Valley State 1

Columbus State found an early 1-0 advantage in the opening frame. Mary-Catherine Sorrell notched a one-out double and was driven in on the RBI single from Nova Wright. After a stolen bag at second and a wild pitch, Wright threatened in scoring position but was left stranded to close the inning.

Rylie Beddingfield led the bottom of the second off with a walk and stole second before moving to third on a base hit from Izzy Ripatti. Beddingfield then stole home for the 2-0 lead after the FVSU caught Ripatti out at second. After a scoreless third inning, Fort Valley State would eventually find a run in the fourth with a solo homer from Leah Leonard to open the inning.

Thankfully, that was all the Wildcats could muster up in the inning as CSU managed to respond with a two-hit fourth inning of their own. The Lady Cougars took a three-run lead with an RBI single to center field from the bat of Aubree Ussery, scoring Ripatti in the process. Ripatti would come back to the plate in the sixth inning and homering a two-run ball deep in the left-field corner for the 5-1 advantage.

Quick Hits
  • The Lady Cougars notched nine hits while the Wild Cats notched three
  • Ripatti notched a season-best three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored
  • Sorrell gathered two doubles, and a run scored
  • Ussery followed with two hits, including a double and an RBI
  • CSU stole five bases with Beddingfield leading the way with two\
  • Lily Miller started in the circle and tossed for 4.2 innings for her 10th win of the season, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while notching seven strikeouts
  • Beddingfield closed the final 2.1 innings, walking one batter and striking out two

Game Two - Columbus State 8, Fort Valley State 5

The Lady Cougars struck hard and struck early with a five-run advantage in the first three innings. The opening frame was all CSU as Gracyn Gurley led with a single and stole two bases to move into scoring position. After a walk, Sorrell then stole second and moved to third while Gurley stole home for the first run. After a walk and a stolen base from Wright, CSU loaded the bases with a walk from Holly Lynn. Unfortunately, the FVSU defense held tough with back-to-back fielder's choices to home plate and a fly out to right field to leave the bases loaded and the damage minimal.

CSU's offense began to heat up in the second, notching three runs on four hits to move to a 4-0 lead. Abrianna Green singled with one out and was pushed to third on a double from Gurley. Green and Gurley then crossed the dish with a two-RBI single from Sorrell turned into extra bases with an error. Sorrell was then driven in on an RBI base hit from Wright.

The Lady Cougars added one more run with an RBI single from Gurley for a 5-0 lead in the third inning. Fort Valley State would eventually find a score in the fourth inning with a three-hit performance to push in a run and leave a pair stranded.

An RBI double from Anna Waites and a two-RBI double from Wright gave CSU an 8-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. CSU nearly forced the game two end early on a run rule but left a runner on base to close the frame. Fort Valley State would not go down without a fight, chipping away at the deficit with an RBI single in the sixth and a four-hit, three-run seventh inning that nearly leveled the game with a pair of runners left stranded to close the game.

  • CSU held onto a narrow 11-10 hitting advantage, the first double-digit hitting performance for the Lady Cougars since Mar. 22
