ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - No. 19 Columbus State men's tennis battled No. 10-ranked Grand Valley State (Mich.) on Tuesday morning in the NCAA Division II National Championship Round of 16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The 12th-seeded Cougars (13-11) grabbed the lead early over the fifth-seeded Lakers (19-2), capturing the doubles point with wins at the second and third lines.
Elias Peter and
Andrea Sandrone were upset on court one, 6-4 to go down. CSU bounced back with a 6-2 win on court three as
Samer Al Tori and
Camilo Cano handled business, leveling the doubles section. Court two resulted in a favorable finish for
Yike Liu and
Benedek Szombathelyi, securing a 6-4 match win for the doubles point.
Unfortunately, Grand Valley State shifted momentum in their favor with Denys Zamaraiev's 6-4, 6-2 win over Cano at the first line of singles play. The Lakers moved to a 2-1 lead with a win at the second line of singles. Sandrone opened with a 6-1 first set over Victor Lopes but dropped the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3.
The Lakers secured the match with Patricio Sepulveda's 7-5, 6-3 performance over Peter at the fifth line followed by a 6-3, 7-5 finish from Jorge Ruiz over Szombathelyi at the fourth line of singles. Matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles were left unfinished.
Columbus State finishes the season with the program's fifth-consecutive appearance in the Round of 16.
