COLUMBUS – Columbus State University women's basketball Head Coach
Matt Houser has announced a new addition to the program, bolstering the coaching staff with an assistant coach hire. The Lady Cougars program is pleased to announce the hire of Jada Walton as the new assistant coach.
Walton brings with her a strong commitment to player development and a growing track record of success, previously serving as an assistant coach at Baton Rouge Community College. While at BRCC, the team improved from a five-win season to a 15-7 record as Walton was instrumental in player development, with a particular focus on guard play. Her efforts led to multiple players earning All-Region honors. In addition to on-court responsibilities, Walton led the program's recruiting efforts.
"Super excited about adding Jada to our staff," Houser stated. "It's great to have another assistant who's from Georgia and truly understands what this state is all about."
Prior to her time at BRCC, Walton served as an assistant coach at Otero College, where she was a key contributor to the Lady Rattlers' defensive schemes and overall player growth, producing talent that went on to four-year institutions. Her service helped the team secure a second-place finish in the region, coaching the Region IX Defensive Player of the year, two All-Region selections, and a pair of All-Tournament team members.
The Lithonia, Ga. native's coaching career builds on a highly respected academic and athletic background. Walton earned a master's degree in Sport Management from Troy University, where she also played for the women's basketball (2021-23). During her time at Troy, she was a key piece to the team's success as the Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title. She also led the program as a captain during the 2022-23 season, helping lead the team to a postseason WNIT appearance.
Before Troy, Walton attended Texas Tech University (2019–21), where Walton earned a bachelor's degree and was a member of the women's basketball program. Walton began her collegiate playing career at Texas A&M University (2017–19), where she helped the Aggies reach back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. Known for defensive tenacity and academic discipline, Walton earned team honors for both defense and academics.
In the 2018-19 season, Walton played in 32 games with two starts, often serving as the team's defensive stopper. She led or co-led the bench in points, rebounds, blocks, and steals during the Aggies' 2019 tournament run. A graduate of Southwest Dekalb High School, Walton's journey reflects a dedication to excellence in athletics, academics, and mentorship, making her an asset to the Lady Cougars program.
"Jada was one of the great players to come out of Georgia, and now she's channeling that greatness into coaching," Houser added. "Her ability to develop players, especially guards, and her strength in recruiting will be huge for our program. She's going to help us stay nationally competitive year in and year out!"
