Senior Leadership Power CSU Softball’s 2026 Outlook

The Columbus State University Softball program enters the 2026 season with a blend of experience, proven leadership, and renewed focus as Head Coach Brad Huskisson begins his 19th season at the helm of the Cougars.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University Softball program enters the 2026 season with a blend of experience, proven leadership, and renewed focus as Head Coach Brad Huskisson begins his 19th season at the helm of the Cougars. Huskisson sits just three victories shy of 700 career wins, a milestone that reflects nearly two decades of sustained success.

Joining the Cougar coaching staff this season is Assistant Coach Claire Ginder, who will make her Columbus State debut in 2026 and brings added energy and perspective to the program.

Veteran Leadership Returns

Columbus State returns five seniors from last year's squad, providing a strong foundation both offensively and defensively.

Behind the plate, Nova Wright posted one of the team's most consistent offensive seasons in 2025. Wright led the Cougars in batting average, hitting .278 with an .868 OPS, totaling 47 hits in 169 at-bats. Her production included 13 doubles, three triples, and six home runs, while driving in 37 runs and scoring 35 times. Wright also posted a .497 slugging percentage and a .371 on-base percentage, anchoring the lineup with power and reliability.

Fellow catcher Holly Lynn provided the Cougars' biggest power threat a season ago, leading the team in home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.637). Lynn finished the year with a 1.051 OPS, 34 RBIs, and 86 total bases, giving Columbus State a formidable presence in the middle of the order.

Speed and versatility return to the infield with Mary-Catherine Sorrell, who led the team in stolen bases, going 13-for-15 on the year. Sorrell hit .277, collected 44 hits, and scored 30 runs, adding pressure on opposing defenses with her ability to reach base and disrupt pitchers.

The senior class is rounded out by Anna Waites (OF) and Kara Wegienka (1B), both of whom provide defensive stability and veteran leadership as Columbus State looks to take the next step offensively.

Strength in the Circle

In the pitching circle, the Cougars return a proven arm in sophomore Lily Miller, who posted an 11–5 record with a 2.61 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 104.2 innings last season. Miller recorded 74 strikeouts, limited opponents to a .231 batting average, and threw seven complete games, giving Columbus State a dependable presence in key situations.

She'll be joined by Hanna Deschambault, who adds depth and experience after transferring from Indian River State College.

Season Goals
  • Increase team batting average and on-base percentage
  • Utilize speed to create scoring opportunities through stolen bases and aggressive baserunning
  • Apply defensive pressure with situational hitting and smart execution
  • Continue strong pitching performances while developing depth in the circle
  • Compete for a Peach Belt Conference Championship and make a deep postseason push
Coach's Perspective
"We've got a veteran group that understands what it takes to compete every day in this conference," said Huskisson. "Our goal this season is to be more aggressive offensively, use our speed to our advantage, and play Cougar softball the right way. With the leadership we have returning, and the energy Coach Ginder brings to our staff, I'm excited about where this team can go."
