AIKEN, S.C. | Mia Robinson converted a first-half penalty kick and the Columbus State University Women's Soccer defense held strong as the Cougars secured a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference road victory over USC Aiken Sunday afternoon at the USCA Soccer Stadium.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, the conference matchup was moved to Sunday due to weather concerns surrounding Hurricane Isaias.
The victory moves Columbus State to 9-2-2 overall and 5-0-2 in PBC play, keeping the Cougars unbeaten through their first seven conference matches. USC Aiken falls to 4-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the PBC.
Columbus State controlled the match from the opening whistle and found the breakthrough in the 18th minute. Robinson stepped to the spot and converted a penalty kick at 17:35 for her seventh goal of the season, giving CSU a 1-0 advantage.
The Cougars continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half, firing 12 shots and putting five on frame while holding the Pacers to just three attempts.
CSU kept the pressure on after halftime with another 12 shots, including seven on goal. The Cougars also earned seven second-half corner kicks while keeping USC Aiken without a corner for the entire match.
Despite creating several chances to extend the lead, Robinson's first-half strike proved to be all Columbus State needed. Huda Sayedzada and the Cougar defense kept the Pacers off the scoreboard over the full 90 minutes to secure the shutout and road conference victory.
Columbus State finished with a commanding 24-4 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars also held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
