COLUMBUS — The Columbus State University softball team earned an 8-0 shutout victory over Florida Southern College on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field as part of the Red-White-Blue Classic hosted by Columbus State. The win marked a milestone for head coach
Brad Huskisson, who secured the 700th victory of his collegiate coaching career.
Columbus State broke through in the third inning when
Mary-Catherine Sorrell laid down a bunt single that brought home
Abrianna Green to open the scoring. The Cougars extended the lead in the fourth with back-to-back solo home runs from
Nova Wright and
Aubree Ussery, followed by an RBI groundout from
Ansley Collins to make it a 4-0 game.
The Cougars continued to add on in the fifth inning as
Avery Hays delivered an RBI single to score Wright. Columbus State capped the scoring in the sixth, plating three runs on RBI hits from Green and Sorrell, with Sorrell driving in two on a single through the left side.
Lily Miller was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout. The Sophomore allowed just two hits while striking out six and walking one to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Offensively, Sorrell led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 performance and three RBIs. Green finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Wright and Ussery each homered and crossed the plate twice. Columbus State totaled 11 hits in the contest and played error-free defense.
Records: Columbus State improves to 3–2 overall, while Florida Southern falls to 1–3.
