COLUMBUS — The Columbus State University Softball team battled to the final inning Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 in eight innings to No. 6-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery at Cougar Field.
The Cougars (15-9) delivered a strong all-around performance, recording seven hits and playing error-free defense while turning two double plays in a tightly contested pitcher's duel.
Junior
Khloe Shears was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game eight-inning effort while allowing just one run on six hits. She kept the Warhawks scoreless through seven innings and induced 13 groundouts in a highly efficient outing.
Columbus State created multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game, led by
Kara Wegienka and
Abrianna Green with two hits apiece.
Ansley Collins and
Aubree Ussery each added doubles as the Cougars totaled seven hits and applied consistent pressure offensively.
Auburn University at Montgomery broke through with the game's only run in the top of the eighth inning.
Columbus State returns to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday, March 21, hosting Middle Georgia State for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Cougar Field.
