ALBANY, GA. – The Columbus State baseball team completed the season sweep of in-state foe Albany State University with a 7-2 road victory on Tuesday night in non-conference action from Golden Rams Field.
Columbus State has now won five straight games as part of its current win streak and moves its overall record to 18-9, while Albany State falls to 16-12 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs for an early 2-0 advantage.
- Columbus State put up four runs on three hits and three walks in the fourth inning as junior Jacob Smith put CSU on the scoreboard with an RBI single to left, followed by an RBI single from fellow junior Corey Berry that brought two runs across home plate.
- Junior Jax Yoxtheimer finished the scoring with an RBI single of his own in the inning to score Smith from second and give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
- Columbus State added two more runs to its total in the seventh inning as senior Warrick Wilmot was hit by a pitch with one out and later scored on a wild pitch, and Smith tallied his second RBI single of the game in the frame.
- The Cougars' lead moved to 7-2 in the eighth inning when Yoxtheimer drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a Jackson Chizek single before scoring on a double play ball to the ASU shortstop.
- Redshirt-senior Mathew McMahan shut down the Golden Rams' offense across the final five innings to keep the CSU win intact.
NOTES
- McMahan (1-0) earned his first career win after tossing five shutout innings out of the bullpen, giving up just two hits with a season-high seven strikeouts over five innings of work.
- Redshirt-junior Nathan Webb got the start for Columbus State, his third of the season, and gave up just two runs on four hits with a CSU career-high six strikeouts.
- Smith and Yoxtheimer each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate as Smith recorded two RBI and a run scored, while Yoxtheimer had a run scored, one RBI, and a stolen base.
- Berry also had two RBI in the victory, and Wilmot scored twice from his designated hitter spot.
