LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The Columbus State University softball team dropped a tightly contested 2-1 decision to the University of West Alabama in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the University of West Alabama Softball Complex.
In a game defined by strong pitching on both sides, Columbus State managed just four hits but capitalized on a West Alabama error to take an early lead in the fourth inning.
Anna Waites led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a fielder's choice by
Nova Wright, aided by a throwing error by the Tigers' third baseman to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
West Alabama responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning, delivering the game's decisive swing. Ella Watson connected on a two-run home run to left center, scoring Haley Shannon and putting the Tigers ahead 2-1.
Columbus State's
Khloe Shears (15–6) turned in a strong complete-game effort despite the loss, allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out eight over six innings. She faced only 23 batters and kept the Cougars within striking distance throughout.
At the plate, Waites led the Cougars with a 1-for-3 performance, including a double and the team's lone run scored.
Libby Buchanan,
Nova Wright, and
Abrianna Green each added a hit, while the Cougars stranded six runners on base.
Game Two
LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The Columbus State University softball team dropped a 2–0 decision to the University of West Alabama in game two of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday evening at the University of West Alabama Softball Complex. With the loss, Columbus State falls to 27-17 overall on the season.
After three scoreless innings, West Alabama broke through in the fourth inning with the only runs of the game. Kayla Morris delivered an RBI double down the left-field line to plate Trinity Hatcher and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Trinity Brooks added an RBI single, and a throwing error by the Cougars allowed Morris to score, extending the advantage to 2-0.
Columbus State was limited offensively throughout the contest, recording just three hits while drawing five walks.
Mary-Catherine Sorrell,
Aubree Ussery, and
Anna Waites each tallied a hit for the Cougars, who stranded eight runners on base and were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities.
In the circle,
Lily Miller (4.0 IP) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in the decisive fourth inning.
Hanna Deschambault provided solid relief, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out one to keep the Cougars within reach.
Columbus State returns home to resume Peach Belt Conference play, hosting USC Aiken in a three-game series beginning Friday, April 17, with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.
