Game One
TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — The Columbus State University softball team dropped a narrow 3–2 decision to the University of Alabama in Huntsville in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
Alabama Huntsville struck first in the opening inning, using an RBI single from Alexa Douthitt to take a 1-0 lead. Columbus State answered in the bottom half of the inning, as
Ansley Collins came around to score on a Chargers throwing error to even the game at 1-1.
The Chargers regained control in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a Columbus State error to plate two unearned runs and take a 3-1 advantage.
Columbus State responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, trimming the deficit to one.
Kara Wegienka delivered an RBI single up the middle to score
Carlee Wilson, making it a 3-2 contest.
The Cougars threatened offensively throughout the game, finishing with seven hits, but were unable to push across the tying run over the final three innings.
Collins led the way at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored, while
Nova Wright,
Aubree Ussery,
Anna Waites,
Libby Buchanan, and Wegienka each recorded a hit. Wright added a double, and Wegienka drove in Columbus State's lone RBI of the contest.
In the circle,
Lily Miller (5-6) took the loss, allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits over 4.0 innings.
Hanna Deschambault was strong in relief, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Game Two
TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — The Columbus State University softball team dropped an 11-2 decision to the University of Alabama in Huntsville in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Stadium, falling to 20-14 overall on the season.
Columbus State got on the board in the third inning, as
Mary-Catherine Sorrell launched a solo home run to left center for her first of the season. The Cougars added another run in the fifth inning when
Aubree Ussery delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring
Carlee Wilson.
The Cougars recorded seven hits in the contest, with
Anna Waites leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance. Sorrell finished 1-for-1 with a home run and an RBI, while Ussery,
Nova Wright,
Gracyn Gurley, and Wilson each added a hit.
In the circle,
Khloe Shears (11-5) took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits over 1.2 innings.
Hanna Deschambault followed in relief, surrendering four runs over 1.1 innings.
Gracyn Gurley closed out the game with a scoreless inning, striking out three.
Columbus State returns to Peach Belt Conference play on Friday, April 3, traveling to Americus, Ga., to face Georgia Southwestern State University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Lady Canes Field.
