COLUMBUS — Columbus State University Director of Athletics Justin Hay has announced the hiring of Spencer Mathis as Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Media & Communications, bringing in an emerging talent in NCAA athletic communications to lead the Cougars' communications and digital strategy efforts while continuing to elevate Columbus State University Athletics. Mathis will begin June 1st in Columbus.

Mathis joins Columbus State University from Young Harris College, where he currently serves as Director of Media & Communications for the Mountain Lions. In that role, he leads communications strategy for 20 programs, serving as the primary media contact across all sports while overseeing social media, game day execution, content creation, and statistics. Mathis manages the department's official athletics website through SIDEARM Sports and directs all social media and digital content efforts, playing a pivotal role in elevating the overall brand and visibility of Young Harris College Athletics.
During his tenure, Mathis has led significant growth across the department's social media accounts, highlighted by a surge in engagement and followers across all media platforms. He has played a key role in modernizing content strategy and expanding audience engagement to elevate the overall brand. In addition, he has overseen and mentored student workers, helping them grow professionally while preparing them to pursue opportunities in their chosen fields.

Beyond his work in collegiate athletics, Mathis has served as the play-by-play voice of Union County Panthers football on 95.1 WJRB since 2022, showcasing his versatility in broadcasting, play-by-play, and game day coverage. His experience managing game days, media coverage, and broadcast operations further strengthens his ability to lead and elevate the Cougars' communications and media operations.
