COLUMBUS, GA. – The Columbus State baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss at the hands of the University of West Florida on Wednesday in the finale of a two-game midweek series at Burger King Stadium.
Columbus State is now 23-13 overall, while West Florida improves to 29-9 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- West Florida gained an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning and added another run in the top of the third for a 2-0 advantage.
- Columbus State responded with a run of its own in the third on a sac fly from senior Jackson Chizek to cut the lead in half before tying the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning when senior Bryce Knox scored from third on a UWF fielding error following a lead-off double.
- The Argos went back in front with a run in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh for a 4-2 lead.
- In the eighth inning, West Florida scored two runs on three hits to move ahead by four runs with an inning and a half to play.
- The Cougars put one runner on in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to extend the contest.
NOTES
- Redshirt-freshman Logan Shrewsbury got his first start in a CSU uniform and went 4.1 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision.
- Despite a quality outing in relief, junior Wyatt Tharpe (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.
- Redshirt-junior Bryce Sanders surrendered a hit with a strikeout in ? of an inning out of the bullpen, while sophomore Jack Waller tallied two strikeouts in an inning on the mound.
- Junior Corey Berry was 2-for-3 at the plate for Columbus State and scored a run, while Knox was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored of his own.
- Junior Jax Yoxtheimer was also 2-for-4 from his spot atop the order.

Columbus State will be tested once again this weekend as the team travels to Dahlonega, Ga., for a three-game Peach Belt series with No. 13 University of North Georgia. Game one of the weekend is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10.
